From data to dental care, South Dakota confronts oral health disparities
The South Dakota Dental Association announced intentions to work collaboratively with the state’s reservations to improve access to dental care following the release of an oral health survey conducted by Colorado School of Public Health’s Center for Native Oral Health Research in partnership with the W.J. Kellogg Foundation.
The survey “An Oral Assessment of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,” was the first study of its kind conducted with the reservation community since 1999. Key findings indicate that 68 percent of adult participants had evidence of gum disease, of that number, 16% were advanced.
The announcement comes alongside the association’s plans to form a statewide workgroup to address the oral health challenges facing the state’s native communities.
In previous years the state’s dental association focused on improving the statewide workforce and general access to care, but more recently it has turned its attention to the specific oral health issues of the South Dakota’s nine tribes.
